For a small cow, it comes with a big story.
Dating back to Celtic times, the Dexter cow has roamed freely on Irish lands, living off grass and vegetation and doing what comes naturally to it.
All the while, helping to improve biodiversity and providing beef, and dairy for all those who seek it.
Our love for the Dexter cow brought us together, via the Dexter Cattle Society, to bring you Heritage Herd. The society was founded in 1890 to help protect and nurture the tradition, quality and integrity of the breed. As a result future generations get to taste the wonderful beef, and learn about a cow that doesn’t give up.
In the past thirty years, interest in the Dexter cow has reignited. In a railing against mass produced, ‘bigger is better’ attitudes, people have turned to the Dexter cow for inspiration. Its small stature, and independent nature, has taught us – or retaught us – what we should’ve known best: Nature knows best.
That’s why at Heritage Herd, we’re committed to protecting and preserving this wonderful cow. We’ve come together, 750+ independent farmers from all over Ireland, to form a home to tell the story and spread the word about Dexter cows. Because they deserve nothing less. Thanks for being a part of their revival, and be sure to spread the word too.
